Diversity, Equality, and Inclusivity in Upaya
Diversity, Equality, and Inclusivity in Upaya
I am a very reserved guy. So, when I was asked to share my experiences, and that too concerning my disability, my first thought was a straightforward no. But then, what the hell, you can’t grow if you don’t step out of your comfort zone. So, here goes.
A good work environment and growth opportunities were the main two things that prompted me to join Upaya. After I joined, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that Upaya is highly focused on bringing in diversity, equality, and inclusivity. Upaya conducted DEI sessions and participated in the Women for Growth workshops in the process of becoming a more inclusive organization. Honestly, for me, yes, these programs are important and should be carried out regularly, but people and their treatment of physically challenged persons are way more important.
This is entirely my viewpoint regarding disability. There may be other people with similar issues but different perspectives, and they are entitled to disagree with me if they want to. Personally, I don’t like to be treated differently from any other person. Fortunately, I have never been wrongly treated by people, so I can’t cook up stories about harsh treatment. My case is quite the opposite. When somebody tries to help me solely because I am physically challenged, I feel guilty, embarrassed, and uncomfortable. I feel like, because of me, somebody had to put in the extra effort that would not have been needed if I wasn’t physically challenged. Just to let you know, I am not trying to say that those who helped me along my journey did something wrong. It proves that they were pure-hearted.
Similarly, I am not implying that I am some kind of saint who doesn’t need help. I am just trying to say that I want to be treated the same as everyone else. This is what Upaya has given me. Here, I am just another colleague who is capable of doing his job and handling his stuff independently. Other than that, Upaya has provided me with learning opportunities through the various workshops and sessions without an iota of discrimination.
